Why it is important for instructional designer
to choose appropriate media of instruction?
Dept. of Educational Management, SE, BNUZ
1. Media helps to realize some beliefs of Behaviorism and Constructivism.
The media is the physical means by which the instructional message is communicated, such as television, print materials, teacher, or computer. We instructional designers emphasize media to give learners appropriate stimulation so that they can respond and then recognize what teachers are teaching. We also emphasize media to provide learners specific situations for the lesson to help them construct the meanings. So under the help of media, it is easier to mix the beliefs of some educational philosophies into instruction.
2. Various media have different functions appropriate for not all instructional goals.
Media have various functions which are appropriate for specific goals. That is, different types of media have different advantages and disadvantages. When choosing media, we must clearly understand what we need and then make decisions. Or we would use media in the wrong way. As a result, instructional goals can not be met perfectly. For instance, text books are more help to show and to deliver knowledge but less help to feedback. Computer teaching systems are more help to feedback but less help to control learners’ learner behavior.
3. Media cannot be provided all the time.
Every school has their budget for media. We cannot choose media without considering the cost of them. Though some expensive equipment are much helpful in some instructions, we cannot choose them in many school for the limit of money. So we should choose possible media rather than just best media.
4. Usages of media are limited by the teaching environments.
Every media has its demand for the environment. For instance, epidiascope demands a dark room; video tape demands a video player and a screen big enough; simulator demands a little number of learners for it is not suitable for group learning. All these should be the important points that instructional designers have to consider.
